Celebrating Cinco De Mayo in and Around Vancouver and Portland

April 29, 2021
portland cinco de mayo

As much as we like a good margarita Cinco De Mayo is more than just going out to have a good drink. It is a celebration commemorating the day the Mexican army had victory over France at the Battle Of Puebla in 1862. At the time, the U.S. was in its own Civil War but later celebrated Cinco De Mayo for the first time in 1863 as a sign of solidarity with Mexico against French rule. Of course, since then we have celebrated this day with family, friends, good food, drinks, and festivities.

Portlands Cinco De Mayo Fiesta

One of the largest multicultural festivals in Oregon is the Cinco De Mayo Fiesta held at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. This three-day-long fiesta features vendors from live entertainment of musical artists and Mexican dancers to art workshops, games, carnival rides, a kids zone, and even an artisan village leaving plenty for all to enjoy.

Cinco De Mayo Half Marathon

Who is ready to walk or run? This Cinco De Mayo half marathon, 10k, and 5k will be held in person in Portland on Saturday, May 1st. The terrain for this race is a flat course that goes along the Columbia River and has views of the infamous Mt. Hood. Though this event will look a little different with restrictions put in place it will be well worth getting outside and enjoying a nice run or walk.

Festive Restaurant Faves

The Matador- There are a lot of places to choose from when it comes to Mexican food but we like to think that there are a few that stand above the rest. One of our all-time faves is located in NW and SE Portland. The Matador is known for their diverse Tequilas and hands down best Happy Hour! With great ambiance, food and drinks you will not be disappointed.

Nuestra Mesa- This restaurant is a local favorite to many. Serving fresh, house made margaritas that everyone loves is Nuestra Mesa located in downtown Camas, Wa. Here you’ll find everything from a variety of tacos a la carte to authentic mexican entrees that you will no doubt fall in love with.

Cactus YaYa– This southwestern fave is a gem that more people need to find out about. Located in Vancouver, WA on the east side its menu has more than enough items to choose from and their drink menu is top notch! During the warmer seasons they have outdoor seating with a few fire pits going adding to the hip flare of this local establishment.

Even if you choose to not go out for Cinco De Mayo you can always enjoy the festivities from the comfort of your home. Set up a taco bar, pour some drinks and turn up the music. Before you know it you’ll be enjoying the celebrations along with everyone else.
